Marco Paulo was born in Luanda, Angola. After unsuccessfully emerging through S.L. Benfica's youth system, he made his senior debuts with F.C. Alverca, in the second division, as this club's was then Benfica's farm team. Subsequently, he moved to the lower leagues, where he represented three teams, helping G.D. Estoril Praia return to the second level in 2003 with a career-best 17 goals in 36 games.
Paulo then moved abroad, where he would represent Stade Lavallois (France, Ligue 2) and Ionikos FC (Greece). With the latter, he would have his only top flight experience, in which he played in less than one third of the league's games, with his team ranking in last position; he retired from football in June 2007, aged 31.
Marco Paulo opted to represent Angola internationally, going on to gain four caps. Three of those came during the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, against Zimbabwe (twice) and Gabon, scoring against the latter in a 2–2 away draw.[1]
